10. On Beacon Hill Tunnel the work of heading driving was carried on right through with very good

results. As much as 96 feet was driven during China New Year week. The work of widening out however had to

stop as sufficient coolies could not be kept on to do

this. The progress diagram shews the North side lined

right up to the shaft.

r.Barry on his inspection decided that it

would be risky to leave the tunnel unlined even on the

hard places as there was always a chance of a piece of rock

shaking out and falling on a passing train. It was there-

fore decided to put up a thin facework on the sides so

as to give an even support to the arch. It has been

found impossible on this Tunnel to dress a suitable place

to spring a flying arch from.
